3D Animation

                 The Salesman and Bob

So for theanimation, my original idea was a escaped prisinor, who disguises himself as a salesman, tries to sell this car to a fat man. When he sells the car, the police arrest the customer.

I realised that this idea was a bit long and complex, so I deicded to just make it very simple. The new idea is a car salesman trying to sell an electric car to a very large man, who supports the environment. The salesman notices his ‘Heal the World’ shirt and starts putting the environmentalist in an awkward position thay makes him purchase the car. The salesman then start pushing the custormer into the car and the customer manages to get in, but the car breaks down, claiming that the car is cheap.

(First Design) Using the ‘Go Compare’ man as reference I made a start on the salesman character. I originally wanted him to be upbeat and campy.

(Second Design) I decided to use simple shapes for this character.

(Sixth Design) I much prefer this design over the overone’s as the arrow shape can be easily animated, when done right.

Using the arrow shape form the previous design, I make his facial features more clearer than they were. I also used life drawing poses and line of actions to replicate the pose of the character.

I continued making poses for the character to give me a good understanding on what he would look like animated.

(Seventh Design) I wanted to make the character much shorter than the customer, as the customer is much larger and taller than the average ,ale height. I wanted a startling contrast between the two in height differences as it would make the animation look more appealing and interesting.

(First Drawing) For the customer character, I wanted him to be large and tall. I gave him tiny feet as the main focus point is his belly. I used the book ‘Force: Dynamic Life Drawing for Animators’  by Mike Mattesi. This book helps push life drawing and teaches techniques that will make your drawing pop out. In this drawing, the life drawing character has his arms behind his back, with his chest leaning forward. I wanted his belly to be leaning more out than his chest, to show his size.Using the life drawing videos from the YouTube channel, ‘New Masters Academy’, I used the line of action from a particular pose and re imagined a character from that pose.

(Second Drawing)  I decided to redesign the character in simple shapes. This is so that the character can be easily animated.

I continued playing with the shape to see how big or small the character should be.

The Car Salesman

8 foot tall man weighing 400 pounds walks down a street during mid-day when he is approached by a 3foot 2 inch salesman.

In a texes accent. (Salesman) – “Hey ya’ll. You look like a man with a plan called Stan”.

Man frowns and looks down in an intimidating pose.

In a hillbilly  accent(Man) – “My name is Bob”.

(Salesman) – “No matter. I see you are one of those eco-friendly geeks.

(Bob) – “Yea.”?

(Salesman) – “Do you drive a diesel”?

(Bob) – “Yes.”

(Salesman) – “And you support the health and welfare of the environment”?

(Bob) – “ Yea. What’s your point”?

(Salesman) – “So why is a eco-friendly geek as yourself, who supports the environment, driving a diesel car that is one of the main causes of air pollution?”.

(Bob) – “Oh. I never really thought about it”.

(Salesman) – “Oh yea. Air pollution harms all the chicken you seem to be enjoying these days”. Salesman lightly pats Bob’s fat tummy.

(Bob) Bob’s stomach growls- “But I like chicken”.

(Salesman) – “Well, buy this electric car and slowly all the chickens of the world won’t go into extinction.

(Salesman) – “Mind blowing technology including vibrating seats. Have a go yourself”.

Salesman starts pushing Bob into the tiny car. He struggles so and manages to put Bob in the car. The car leans to one side and then falls on top of the salesman.

(Bob) – “Oh yea. This is quite nice. I’ll take it.”

Storyboard

I got feedback saying the story was way too long and needed cutting down.

Here is my newer script.

SCREEN SHOT

Idea number 2
So, my 2nd idea is a very old man is slowly paying for his items at shop. Instead of pound coins he uses pennies. This frustrates the shop keeper and he starts cursing at him. In the end, the boss then fires him.

Research Material

I had to research certain things that would help me for my idea. New masters academy helped me a lot with my poses before, as it is a YouTube channel with live models posing. I was able to get good reference for drawing characters in a certain way.

I also used certain books to help me. The book, Force: Dynamic Life Drawing for Animators by Michael D. Mattesi helped me understand how to turn life drawings into caractures.

Character Designs

After getting the idea done, I decided to work from what I got and start designing the characters. I needed a grumpy salesman and a customer

20171027_105855545_ios.jpg
This is my first character design of the customer. I used the life drawing youtube channel as reference for the poses. What inspired me was the angry character from inside out. His box shape was simple, yet effective and I thought of appling that into my character design.

20171027_105911510_ios.jpg

img_0648.jpg
I then decided to completely change the shape of the character. This new character has a much larger body yet tiny legs. Using the Force Life drawing book and seeing how simple the caractures look in terms of their shape, I decided to go simple with this design.

Here is the side view.

For the customer, I decided to go for the feeble, old man root. I wanted the customer to be really old and feeble.

OLD MANOLD MAN 2

img_0650.jpg
I first practiced drawing on how an old man would start walking and be positioned.

img_0647.jpg
I then made his back even more hunched over and made his arms a lot longer than normal.

Changing the idea

Still keeping the character, I decided to change my animation idea. instead of an old man slowly paying while the cashier stresses, I decided to make the old man the cashier and the fat woman the customer. I had a interesting idea were the old man is struggling to here what the customer is trying to say and the customer ends up shouting at the top of her lungs. I changed the idea as I wasn’t too happy on how it would end and felt like it didn’t make sense for the cashier to be stressing over the customer paying, as they are getting paid to tolerate people like him.

Re-thinking the idea

After getting critical feedback and coming to an honest realisation, I decided to go back to my salesman idea, as this fast food idea would require me doing a facial rig, for two characters, which would be very time consuming. I only have a month to complete this project and I didn’t realise how much I would have to do, as my animatic has alot of voice acting. So I want t o go back to my salesman idea, and really start thinking about how I make the idea basic, yet interesting.

My final idea

So my final idea is  a salesman trying to sell large, expensive cars to this fat man, but he refuses and wants to buy the cheapest, smallest car in the room.

Here is the new storyboard

I decided to use my customer from my second idea and have him as my salesman in my final idea.

Modelling the fat customer

steo 3
When modelling, I started with a box and started adding edge loops around to resemble the shape of my character.
step 2
This however didn’t go well as the character started to look very boxy.

better ball
So I decided to scrape that and just use a shpere. I modelled the legs sepratly and combing them to the body afterwords.
fat wire
I then modelled the head and hair after that.
ft blend
Once my model was done, I then duplicated the head five times to make different expressions for the character. I used the ‘soft modification tool’ to streach and pull the vertices to make the expressions.

And side view.

Modelling the salesman

step 7
I started with the head using a box.
step 8
Once that was done, I modelled the body using certain blend shape toold to streath the shape.
step 6
Moddeling the arm

the body hard.PNG
Modelling the body was very difficult as the character has a hunched back and I kept struggling to model it from my drawings.

I did the exact same with the fat customer.

Once the characters were fully rigges, I made an animatic for my animation.
